OCB is one of a small number of ophthalmology centers in the United States that offers specialized comprehensive care for uveitis and inflammatory conditions that affect the eye. Led by Lana M. Rifkin, MD, who is fellowship trained in uveitis and one of the premier uveitis specialists and researchers in the country, OCB provides patients with a full range of services associated with diagnosing and treating this complex condition.
Uveitis is inflammation of the uvea, which is the middle layer of the eye between the retina and the white part of the eye known as the sclera. However conditions that fall under its umbrella can also affect other parts of the eye, including the retina, lens and optic nerve.
Managing uveitis can be multi-faceted because it is often a feature of one of a number of systemic inflammatory conditions, such as scleritis, B-27 associated disease, and sometimes autoimmune disease, including such conditions as lupus, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. These conditions and others associated with uveitis are sometimes first discovered during an eye exam.
OCB works in close collaboration with other specialists who may be involved in the care of our patients with uveitis so that they receive the treatment they need for the best possible outcome.
