Top Notch Refractive Surgery at OCB

U.S. astronauts and active pilots in the Air Force are now allowed to undergo LASIK with the IntraLase femtosecond laser, according to a press release from Advanced Medical Optics (AMO, Santa Ana, Calif.). The military approval is based on studies on AMOís Advanced CustomVue LASIK with IntraLase, AMO added.
NASAís decision came on the heels of a review of military clinical data, predominantly work from Steven Schallhorn, M.D., former director, Cornea and Refractive Surgery, U.S. Navy.
ìNASA followed the Naval Aviation clinical studies closely with a particular interest in both safety and quality of vision under extreme conditions,î Dr. Schallhorn said. ìWavefront guided and femtosecond lasers were proven to provide excellent safety with consistent visual results of 20/20 or better. LASIK was able to withstand even the most extreme rigors of warfare and flight.î NASAís approval includes pilots as well as mission and payload specialists.
