 Biography Bonnie An Henderson completed her ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Her undergraduate studies were at Dartmouth College. She was accepted early to Dartmouth Medical School where she completed her medical degree with high honors. She is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. She serves on the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and has served on the Physician Board of Directors at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Henderson is the founder and president of the Women Ophthalmologists of New England (WONE).
She serves on the editorial advisory board of the Eyenet Magazine of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as the editorial board of Ocular Surgery News. She serves on several committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Society. She is a reviewer for the ophthalmic journals: Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and Journal of Refractive Surgery. Dr. Henderson has authored numerous papers, book chapters, and abstracts and has delivered over 100 invited lectures nationally and internationally. Her textbook, ìEssentials of Cataract Surgeryî is widely used in training programs throughout the United States. Her second textbook, ìA Complete Surgical Guide for Correcting Astigmatismî is due out in 2009.
Dr. Henderson is a widely recognized expert in cataract surgery and specializes in complicated anterior segment surgery. Prior to becoming a partner at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, she was the Director of Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service and Cataract Consultation Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Hendersonís research has involved cataract surgery outcomes and innovative methods of teaching. With the support of a Department of Defense TATRIC grant, she and her co-investigators have developed a novel computer program to teach cataract surgery to trainees. She is also the developer several medical instruments including of a modified capsule tension ring, astigmatism correcting markers, and a capsule polisher.
Dr. Henderson has received ìBest ofî awards from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery for her research poster and films and has been awarded an Achievement Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She has received the ìTeacher of the Yearî award from the Harvard Medical School and has been named ìTop Doctorî by her peers in Boston Magazine and chosen as a ìBest Doctor in Americaî. She has been quoted in the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, appeared on the television shows WLVI-TV Channel 56 ìDoctors on Callî, CBS Healthwatch, Channel 5 WCVB-TV, and featured on WODS Radio 103.3. She lives with her husband and their 3 children. Her main hobbies include culinary arts and competing in triathlons.
