Biography
A leader in cataract, glaucoma and laser surgery, Dr. Shingleton does more cataract and glaucoma surgery than any other ophthalmologist in New England. He welcomes and treats a worldwide clientele at his practice with the renowned Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. In addition, he maintains a highly respected international reputation as a lecturer and clinical researcher in the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Shingleton received his training at Princeton University, The University of Michigan and Harvard Medical School. He graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Scholastic Honorary Society. He received his M.D. degree with honors from The University of Michigan and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Scholastic Honorary Society. He completed his residency in ophthalmology through the Harvard Medical School at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Following residency training, Dr. Shingleton was awarded an Heed Foundation Fellowship in cataract, glaucoma and anterior segment surgery at the same institution and served for one year as a consultant for the worldwide outreach programs of the International Eye Foundation. Currently, Dr. Shingleton is an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine. He is a Surgeon in Ophthalmology at both the Boston Eye Surgery and Laser Center and the Cape Cod Eye Surgery and Laser Center and maintains clinical privileges at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. These academic responsibilities keep Dr. Shingleton active in teaching medical students, residents and fellows in ophthalmology. He is also a board-certified fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has served as an examiner for doctors seeking certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Shingleton has received the Honor Award and Senior Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for scientific presentations and educational activities. He has served as President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). As past chairman of the Glaucoma Clinical Committee for ASCRS and as a member of the American Glaucoma Society and American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Shingleton has instructed thousands of ophthalmologists on how best to perform cataract, glaucoma and laser surgery. He has co-authored two major textbooks and has written over one hundred scientific articles and chapters. He is an innovator in developing CD-ROM teaching programs for cataract and glaucoma and has produced three CD-ROM programs. Dr. Shingleton serves as team ophthalmologist for the Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and the New England Revolutions sports teams. Dr. Shingleton has been selected by his peers to be included in The Best Doctors in America . Boston Magazine recognizes him as one of the top ophthalmologists in the city and Dr. Shingleton is included in Who's Who in America.
