Biography
Dr. Henderson is an internationally-recognized expert in cataract and refractive surgery, specializing in complicated anterior segment surgery. Dr. Henderson’s principal research involves cataract surgery outcomes and innovative methods of teaching, including the development of a groundbreaking digital-based method for teaching cataract surgery, supported by a Department of Defense TATRIC grant. She has invented and commercialized a number of medical instruments including the modified capsule tension ring, astigmatism correcting markers, and a capsule polisher, for which she donates her interests to charity.
The former Director of Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Cataract Consultation at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Dr. Henderson has authored numerous papers, book chapters, and abstracts and has delivered over 200 invited lectures throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. In 2005, she founded Harvard Medical School’s Intensive Cataract Surgical Training Conference, the premier cataract surgery training course for medical residents in the United States. Her textbook, Essentials of Cataract Surgery, is widely used in training programs throughout the United States. Her second textbook, A Complete Surgical Guide for Correcting Astigmatism, was published in 2010.
Dr. Henderson is the Associate Editor for Eyeworld for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, serves on the editorial advisory board of Eyenet Magazine of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and serves on the editorial boards of Ocular Surgery News and Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today. She serves on a number of committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Society. She is a reviewer for the six ophthalmic journals.
Dr. Henderson has been awarded an Achievement Award and Secretariat Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “Best of” awards from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery for her research and films, and the “Teacher of the Year” award from Harvard Medical School. She has numerous times been named by her peers as a “Top Doctor” in Boston Magazine and chosen as a “Best Doctor in America”.
Dr. Henderson completed her ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. She graduated from Dartmouth College and from Dartmouth Medical School with high honors. She is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. She serves on the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and has served on the Physician Board of Directors at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Locally, Dr. Henderson is the founder and president of the Women Ophthalmologists of New England (WONE). She has been quoted in the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald; appeared on WLVI’s Doctors on Call, CBS’s Healthwatch, and Channel 5 WCVB-TV; and featured on WODS Radio 103.3. Married with three children, her interests include culinary arts and competing in triathlons.
